The European Institute for Gender Equality (2021) provided an estimation of the costs of gender-based violence in the EU. The estimation includes costs such as healthcare costs, legal costs and other monetisable and non-monetisable costs (e.g. longer-term physical and emotional impacts on the quality of life of victims and the loss of human life as a consequence of gender-based violence). The study estimated the cost of gender-based violence across the EU-27 is €366 billion a year. Violence against women makes up 79 % of this cost, amounting to €289 billion. While €175 billion is the annually cost for intimate partner violence (of which 87 % is carried out against women).
